FORIO D'ISCHIA
Forio is the second town, population and importance. It spreads in the middle of two headlands, Punta Caruso (Zaro locations) and Punta Imperatore, beaches considered among the most beautiful and green metal screws, that the mountain Epomeo degrade in scenery of incomparable beauty. Forio is an area of 13 sq km with a population of about 12500 people and its altitude is meters 0 above sea level to 700 in the areas of Falanga. It is divided into fractions of Forio Panza and other peripheral villages (Monterone, Cuotto, Citara). It is the only municipality that maintains its historic center with alleys, churches, towers and monuments sighting unchanged in their structure. Major monuments: the church Soccorso (shown on the stamp Poste Italiane) dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve, Torrione, Church of St. Francis of Paola, the church dell'Arciconfraternita of Santa Maria delle Grazie renamed Visitapoveri, Basilica Pontifical S. Maria di Loreto Church St. Vito, the parish church of St. Leonardo Abate, S. Mary Mount. If Ischia is the commercial center of the island, Forio can define culture. In the'50s it was the center for international famous men of the show (Luchino Visconti, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Sir William Walton, Eduardo De Filippo, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton), culture (Elsa Morante, Alberto Moravia, Renato Guttuso, Auden, Pablo Neruda ), politics (Pietro Nenni) and jet-setters (Jackelin Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis) and many others. The Coast Forio, with its continuous indentations and projections, bathing allows not only on long beaches, but also in secluded places. With little effort we can reach Zaro or, at Panza, the unique Bay Sorgeto that for the presence of hot water is, in any season, enchanting destination for a "bath in the night”.
